Hutton-Blevins Art Complex

A newly renovated and extremely spacious two story building with skylights, central heating and air. This building houses the Ceramics, Basic Design, Printmaking, and Sculpture disciplines. The organic floor plan invites movement between studios. Wireless web access is available throughout the building.

Ceramics

  • Clay Mixing – Our clay mixing room is equipped with a clay mixer, pug mill and storage for dry and mixed clay. Students pay a single lab fee each semester, and are allowed unlimited clay at no additional charge!
  • Glaze Preparation – We have hundreds of raw glaze chemicals, mixers, scales, glaze tools – all with safety ventilation. There are two large new, completely computer operated Skutt electric kilns in this room, which are safety vented. There is storage space for raw, bisque, and glazed pottery ware.
  • Kiln Room – Just outside of the glaze prep room there is a separate kiln room housing a 21 cubic foot Geil downdraft, gas, reduction kiln for stoneware firing.
  • Studio Area – The main studio area occupies nearly 3000 square feet, and has four 16 square foot skylights, and five 20 square foot windows to the outside! There are over a dozen electric potters wheels, a Brent slab roller, an extruder, large work tables, and a large area with couches, chairs and big screen TV for watching DVDs. There are sculpture and pottery displays in this studio, as well as over a dozen verdant plants.

Printmaking

Printmakers work well under pressure and we have two Charles Brand etching presses and a Dickerson combination press to give you all the pressure you’ll need! We work in relief, intaglio, planographic, and serigraphic processes. Like the rest of the upper level, light comes from a large skylight. There is a small cluster of Macintosh workstations in the Printmaking room, enabling image compositing and photographic manipulation. Drying racks, sinks, a couch, and a very nice coffee pot round out the Printmaking room nicely.

Sculpture

  • Woodworking – We have a very large sculpture studio that includes a large woodworking room, a welding room, and a general work area. The woodworking area has many power tools including a table saw, radial saw, band saw, and scroll saw. There are sanders and other tools for student use.
  • Welding – We have two large and very modern welding rooms. Virtually every type of welding and steel cutting equipment are there for student use, including: Stick, MIG, TIG and gas welding; Oxygen and Acetylene, and Plasma Arc cutting.
